In the heart of the Peruvian Andes, there exists a hidden world of snow-capped peaks and rushing rivers, of isolated villages and lost civilizations. In 1911, the American explorer Hiram Bingham III became the first person in centuries to uncover the lost city of Machu Picchu, a forgotten Inca citadel high in the mountains. Since then, scores of adventurers have followed in his footsteps, seeking to explore the secrets of the Incas.
One of the most popular ways to explore the Andes is by trekking the Inca Trail, a 44-mile path that leads from the highlands of Cusco to the ruins of Machu Picchu. The trail is a challenging journey, winding through the mountains and crossing raging rivers, but it is well worth the effort, as the views are simply breathtaking.
Along the way, trekkers can visit ancient Inca ruins, including the Temple of the Sun and the Intihuatana stone, which is said to be the world’s most perfect sundial. At the end of the trail, visitors are rewarded with a spectacular view of Machu Picchu, one of the most mysterious and beautiful places on Earth.
